Transfer Application Process
External applicants (non-University of Maryland, College Park students) are to follow the procedures provided by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
If you seek admission to engineering, then all requirements must be met. If you are currently completing one or more of the requirements (including GPA), you may be admitted to the University, but not to the Clark School of Engineering.
Internal applicants (current students at University of Maryland College Park) are to complete the internal online application by the appropriate deadline.
Applications are due by the 5th business day of January or June. All admission requirements must be completed prior to the deadline. Reference the internal application instruction sheet for more details. You can only apply to the Clark School one time as a current University of Maryland student.
FAQ
How will I be notified if I am accepted into the Clark School?
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will contact you via email. The Clark School does not have information on applicants’ admission status.
What happens if I am not directly admitted into Engineering?
If you are not directly admitted as an external applicant, you will either be given your second major choice or placed into Letters & Sciences. If you are an external applicant currently completing the admission requirements (gateway) but will have them completed by the time you start at UMCP, you can request the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to re-review your final transcript for engineering once your grades are in for the gateway requirements.
If the admission requirements are not complete prior to your starting at UMCP, external transfer students must complete at least one semester and then apply as an internal transfer applicant once all engineering admission requirements are satisfied. If you are not admitted as an internal transfer, you then have the opportunity to file an appeal.
If admitted to Engineering, what do I do next?
Once you are admitted, you are required to attend either a transfer orientation (for external applicants) or a Virtual Change of Major Workshop, meet with your intended engineering major department, and with the Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support office advisor (for internal transfers). During either session, you will learn the specific Clark School policies and procedures, review your prior course work, and have the opportunity to meet with advisors. With the help of advisors, you will select courses and register for classes based on prior course work and the major you choose.
How long will it take to graduate after I transfer?
Your anticipated graduation date will depend on your major, your prior coursework, and your planning. Some majors do not offer all of their courses every semester, so you will need to plan very carefully. Work with your departmental advisor to develop a graduation plan to map out your coursework.
