This university-wide award honors senior faculty who, as men and women of outstanding scholarly accomplishment, combined with excellence in teaching, personify our image of the professorate.
Meet The Clark School's Most Recent Recipients
Carol Espy-Wilson, professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Institute for Systems Research, has been selected as a 2012-2013 University Distinguished Scholar-Teacher. Espy-Wilson, whose research focuses on the integration of engineering, linguistics and speech science in speech communication, is the ADVANCE Program for Inclusive Excellence Professor for Women Faculty of Color in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). She is a member of the National Advisory Board on Medical Rehabilitation Research, which advises the National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research at the National Institutes of Health. This board fosters the development of scientific knowledge needed to enhance the health, productively, independence, and quality-of-life of people with disabilities. She also was appointed a fellow of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study for the academic year 2008–2009.
Robert Briber, professor and chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, also has been selected as a 2012-2013 University Distinguished Scholar-Teacher. Briber, who specializes in the thermodynamics of complex polymer systems, structural solutions of novel molecules, and neutron scattering spectroscopy, has been routinely recognized by the university as a "Research Leader" for his efforts in bringing sponsored research dollars to campus. Throughout his career, Briber has been on a mission to promote the field of materials science and engineering, which despite its broad and fundamental applications is often unknown to prospective students and the general public. Under his leadership, MSE's recruiting and outreach efforts have resulted in a threefold increase in the department's undergraduate enrollment over the past four years.
