Great Expectations: Clark School Update
A bequest of $250,000 by Willie Webb will augment the Miss Willie M. Webb Reliability Engineering Fellowship to assist and encourage graduate students, women and minorities in the area of reliability engineering. Webb passed away in April after a long illness. She worked as a technical assistant in the program for 15 years. Supercomputer Naming Contest
Electrical and computer engineering Professor Uzi Vishkin is inviting the public to propose names for a new supercomputer prototype he has invented that could be a model for the next generation of personal computers. The winning name will earn its submitter $500! Deadline: Sept. 15.

Evening with the Stars: Howard County Alumni Networking Event, Sept. 20

Save The Date! Innovation Hall of Fame and White Symposium, Oct. 4
We hope you can join us as we induct the next honoree into the Clark School's Innovation Hall of Fame on October 4 at 4:30 p.m. in the Kim Engineering Building. The induction ceremony will be immediately followed by the 2007 Charles and Helen White Symposium on Engineering Innovation. 2nd Annual "Project Perry" Benefit Golf Tournament, Oct. 19
Sign up for a fun day of golf and support a scholarship for Clark School students, along with the Great Expectations campaign, at the same time. This year's tournament to benefit the Perry Laudenslager Memorial Scholarship fund will take place at the Potomac Ridge Golf Course on October 12 at 9 a.m. The $100 registration fee covers golf, cart, lunch, drinks, yardage book and more. Reunion for the Classes of '47, '57 and '67, Oct. 18

Scott Adams, B.S. '86, aerospace engineering, completed a stint as commanding officer of the nuclear-powered, fast-attack submarine USS Norfolk in July. His efforts to improve the crew's morale earned him the 2006 Battle "E" award.
Robert D. Briskman, M.S. '61, electrical engineering, has received the Aerospace Communications Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics for his work in developing the Satellite Digital Audio Radio Service. Briskman is a co-founder of SIRIUS Satellite Radio.
Kimberly Brown, M.S. '98 and Ph.D. '05, chemical engineering, is the CEO of Amethyst Technologies, LLC, which provides services for the biotechnology sector.
David Buscher, M.S. '72, electrical engineering, was featured in Baltimore Magazine in July along with his family. The article focused on the family's entrepreneurial spirit.
Thomas W. Conroy, B.S. '66 and M.S. '71, electrical engineering, has been named vice president of intelligence programs at Northrop Grumman.
Philip Cory, B.S. '82, electrical engineering, has been named senior director and vice president of General Dynamics Robotics Systems.
Richard Day, B.S. '79, aerospace engineering, has been appointed assistant center director for management systems at Goddard Spaceflight Center.
George Gellrich, B.S. '81, mechanical engineering, has become plant manager for Public Service Enterprise Group at their Salem, N.J., facility.
Richard Jackson, B.S. '70, mechanical engineering, has been elected senior vice president at Bechtel Corporation.
Chris Jelenewicz, B.S. '87, fire protection engineering, was interviewed for a PBS television show about the Beverly Hills (Ky.) Supper Club Fire – the deadliest fire in our nation's history at that time.
Kiwesa King-Yara, M.S. '92, mechanical engineering, has won the 2007 Professional Women in Construction Special Recognition Award. King-Yara is president and founder of Suretech Engineering.
Craig McSavaney, M.S. '90, mechanical engineering, has been named chief operating officer of IP Commerce, Inc., a software company.
Jennifer Nelson, B.S. '82, fire protection engineering, has won the National Fire Protection Association's Standards Medal, the highest award given by the Standards Council, for contributions she has made to the development of fire safety codes and standards.
Clifton Nichols, B.S. '89, aerospace engineering, has been assigned as commander of operation flights (reconnaissance) at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany.
Harold Smith, B.S. '80, electrical engineering, has been named vice president of intelligence at Computer Sciences Corp.
Thomas Smithey, M.Eng. '00, electrical engineering, has received an MBA from the UM Smith School of Business.
Laura Stubbs, Ph.D. '01, mechanical engineering, is a reservist who recently returned to active duty with the U.S. Navy.
Dirk D. Thomas, B.S. '82, mechanical engineering, has joined the Washington, D.C., office of Dewey Ballantine LLP and will co-chair the international law firm's intellectual property litigation group.
Dimitrios Topaltzas, B.S. '88, electrical engineering, announced the opening of new corporate headquarters in Frederick, Md., for Metrico Wireless Inc., which provides user-experience performance measurement solutions to the wireless industry. Topaltzas founded Metrico in 2003.
Nagarajan Valanoor, Ph.D. '01, materials science and engineering, is a tenured academic staff member at the University of New South Wales and was awarded the Australian Research Fellowship by the Australian Research Council.
