Cell Culture Process Development & Understanding Using Systems Biology

The biotech industry relies heavily on empirical knowledge gained over years of experience to drive process development. There exists a significant gap in the mechanistic understanding of the role that cell culture dynamics play in determining the underlying molecular biology and this leads to challenges when dealing with new cell lines or novel molecules. In order to continue to support development of novel biologic products in the future, there needs to be a paradigm shift to increasingly include rational science based methods during cell culture process development. In my talk, I will present two case studies, which while not necessarily novel, represent examples of how the biotech industry can incorporate the use of systems biology to aid in cell culture process development. The first case study describes the use of metabolic flux balance analysis for process understanding and the second case study describes a method to extract meaningful data from transcriptome microarrays.
