Management of Energy Resources for Flexible and Efficient Power Systems

Speaker: Dennice Gayme, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Johns Hopkins University

Abstract:

This talk illustrates the use of control and optimization based methods to provide insight into the analysis, design, and operation of the envisioned new power system. First, we discuss the use of storage to provide greater system flexibility and efficiency. Our analysis is then extended to address the question of how to optimally allocate storage resources over the network. In the second part of the talk, we examine the complementary problem of how wind farm placement affects system damping and offer control strategies to damp a desired set of inter-area oscillation modes of the wind-integrated power system.
