Speaker Biography

Robert E. Fischell, who is passionate about changing the world through inventive genius, hard work, and philanthropy, has had two pioneering careers: his current one inventing life-saving medical devices and a former one helping to create the modern era of space satellites so critical to communications, entertainment, business, and national security. Fischell, who holds more than 200 patents, is the father of modern medical stents, lifetime pacemaker batteries, and implantable insulin pumps. In 2005, Dr. Fischell and his family generously established the Fischell Department of Bioengineering and the Robert E. Fischell Institute for Medical Devices at UMD, which is helping to train the next generation of scientists and inventors. Dr. Fischell received a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Duke University and an M.S. in physics from the University of Maryland. In 1996, he received an honorary Sc.D. degree from the University of Maryland in recognition of his many contributions to the betterment of humankind. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and his numerous awards and recognitions include induction into the Space Technology Hall of Fame. He serves on many non-profit boards including the University of Maryland, College Park Foundation Board of Trustees, the Clark School of Engineering and College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences Boards, and the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
