COLLEGE PARK, Md.⎯Information follows for media interested in attending the grand opening of the University of Maryland Energy Research Center (UMERC).

WHAT: The grand opening of the University of Maryland Energy Research Center, which brings together world-renowned researchers across many disciplines working on development of sustainable energy technologies and policies. The center’s areas of focus include green jobs, energy entrepreneurship, building efficiency, and electric cars and charging stations. The event will include an open house and a ribbon-cutting photo op with brief remarks by several speakers.

WHO: Speakers to include Arun Majumdar, director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) and acting under secretary, U.S. Department of Energy; Abigail Hopper, energy advisor to Gov. Martin O’Malley; Darryll Pines, dean of the A. James Clark School of Engineering; C. Dan Mote, Jr., Regents Professor, Glenn L. Martin Institute Professor of Engineering, and former president, University of Maryland; Patrick O’Shea, vice president of research for the University of Maryland and Eric Wachsman, director of UMERC.

WHEN: September 26, 2011, 9 a.m. (open house), 9:30 a.m. (ribbon-cutting); following the ceremony, Majumdar will present “Department of Energy ARPA-E Program, Research and Vision” at 11 a.m.
