White Symposium to Examine Role of Helicopters in Society

WHAT: "The Impact of Helicopters in Society Today: Search and Rescue, Law Enforcement, and National Defense, with a Special Appearance by the Gamera Human-Powered Helicopter Team"--The 2012 Charles and Helen White Symposium on Engineering Innovation at the A. James Clark School of Engineering--will examine current state-of-the-art helicopter technologies and likely future developments, as well as explore crucial applications of helicopters in society today. Speakers will describe the development and capabilities of the fastest experimental craft. The Clark School's Gamera student team will highlight the challenges of building and flying their human-powered helicopter in pursuit of world records and the American Helicopter Society's Sikorsky Competition.

WHO: Speakers include:
- Ashish Bagai '90, '92, '95, rotor blade designer for the Sikorsky X2 TD Demonstrator and this year's Clark School Innovation Hall of Fame inductee
- Captain Daniel Brown, U.S. Army pilot and a Clark School aerospace engineering graduate student
- Deputy William Schepleng, aero-gyro pilot for the Queen Anne's County, Md., Sheriff's Office
- Elizabeth Weiner, student team leader for the Gamera human-powered helicopter team
- Moderator: Mike Hirschberg, executive director of the American Helicopter Society International
