STEM Expo Attracts More Than 800 Attendees
Area Students to Experience Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Fun at the Clark School

WHAT: The STEM Expo is designed to introduce minorities, primarily African American and Latino students within the Prince George's County community and surrounding areas, to careers and educational opportunities in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The event will make students aware of the importance of STEM education and its relationship to the success of the future workforce. The Spring STEM Expo will offer hands-on workshops and seminars geared towards STEM fields. Hands-on activities include creating sumo-wrestling LEGO robots, building towers out of food and researching an environmental health issue using crime scene investigation techniques.
WHO: 800 guests are expected. Students from grades 3-12 will be taking part in the activities. Speakers at the opening program will include Rosemary Parker, director, A. James Clark School of Engineering Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering; and Vicky Evans-McCrarey, president, Mitchellville-Bowie Section, National Council of Negro Women.
Other participants include Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker; Sen. JoAnne Benson, (D-District 24), Prince George's County; Barbara L. Shaw, chair, National Council of Negro Women; and Darryll J. Pines, dean, A. James Clark School of Engineering.
The keynote address will be given by U.S. Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.).
WHEN: Saturday, March 5, 2011 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
WHERE: The opening program will be held in the Colony Ballroom at the Adele H. Stamp Student Union from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Hands on workshops and seminars will be held in 1131 Glenn Martin Hall and various locations throughout campus from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
