Alumnus Miller Receives NRO Honor

Edward A. Miller

Edward A. Miller

Edward A. Miller, ’50 mechanical engineering and one of this year’s Innovation Hall of Fame honorees, was inducted as a Pioneer of Space Reconnaissance at the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) in Chantilly, Va., this month.

Mr. Miller was presented with a plaque and commemorative coin by Donald M. Kerr, NRO director, and John D. Negroponte, director of national intelligence.

His citation read: “Edward A. Miller pioneered the design, construction, deployment and operation of the first man-made object recovered from earth orbit, the Corona Satellite Recovery Vehicle.”

Also this month, Mr. Miller was inducted into the Clark School’s Innovation Hall of Fame with fellow alumnus James W. Plummer, M.S. ’53 electrical engineering, who worked on the Corona Project as well.

Both Mr. Miller and Mr. Plummer were recipients of the Draper Prize from the National Academy of Engineering earlier this year.
