STS Program Has New Director

Betsy Mendelsohn will take over as director of the Science, Technology and Society (STS) Program offered by College Park Scholars, a nationally recognized living-learning community. She replaces James Duncan, professor of mechanical engineering, who has led the STS Program since 2002.

Mendelsohn has worked as a lecturer focusing on the history of technology in society for the STS Program since 2004. She earned her bachelor’s degree at Yale University and holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago.

College Park Scholars is a community of twelve special living-learning programs for academically talented first- and second-year students founded at the University of Maryland in 1994. Each program focuses on a specific theme (such as Science, Technology and Society) and offers specially designed courses and experiences that relate to its theme. Students in College Park Scholars take classes together and live together in selected residence halls.

The interdisciplinary STS Program aims to create a foundation of knowledge surrounding the design, history, and implementation of scientific and technological ideas, and their impact on society. The STS Program is sponsored by the Clark School of Engineering.
