Undergrad Wins Best Paper for Cochlear Model

Clark School student Ameer Abutaleb of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) won the Undergraduate First Prize Award in the 2006 National Capital Region College Student Paper Competition. Abutaleb won for his paper titled "A Nonlinear Model for the Cochlea and its Transistorization."

The competition was sponsored by the District of Columbia Council of Engineering and Architectural Societies (DCCEAS) and the Washington Society of Engineers (WSE). Abutaleb will receive a check for $500 and an invitation to an awards banquet on February 25 as a guest of DCCEAS.

Abutaleb, currently in the second semester of his freshman year at the University of Maryland, received a 4.0 in his first semester. His advisor is ECE Professor Robert Newcomb.

Abutaleb’s achievement marks the second consecutive year that an ECE student won the Washington area paper prize. Senior Amir Ahmadi won the 2005 National Capital Region College Student Paper Competition for his paper titled "Adjustable Time Delays For Optical Clock Recovery Systems."
