Clark School's Dieter Receives University’s Highest Honor

Professor emeritus of mechanical engineering and former dean of the Clark School George Dieter was presented the President's Medal at the University's 21st Annual Faculty and Staff Convocation on October 12 in Memorial Chapel. The President’s Medal recognizes "extraordinary contributions to the intellectual, social and cultural life of the University of Maryland" and is the highest honor bestowed on faculty members.

"George has earned the medal the old-fashioned way," noted senior vice president for academic affairs and provost William Destler, "through years of hard work and dedication to the University of Maryland." Dieter’s long and storied career includes 17 years as dean of engineering, during which he laid the foundation for the school’s ascent among the top engineering schools in the country; the founding of the Engineering Research Center, now the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (MTECH), the university’s premier technology transfer organization; and election to the presidency of the American Society of Engineering Education and to the National Academy of Engineering.
