Aerospace Engineering Alumnus Norris Krone Receives Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award

Norris Krone, Jr., '55, '74 Ph.D., is the recipient of this year's Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award and will be honored at the Fifth Annual University of Maryland Awards Gala on April 17, 2004.

Krone is the president and CEO of the University Research Foundation responsible for the direction of all aspects of the Maryland Advanced Development Laboratory’s technical, financial and program management activities. He is also leader and founder of the Maryland Small Aircraft Laboratory, a NASA-sponsored alliance of 14 organizations. As a previous director of the Air Vehicle Technology Office of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Krone developed the technical principles of the forward swept wing aircraft concept. For these efforts, Aviation Week and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics recognized him as a major contributor to the aeronautical sciences. Before earning his doctorate in 1974, Krone served as a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force, flying more than 200 missions as a forward air controller in Vietnam for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross Bronze Star, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and Vietnamese Medal of Honor.
