Mosleh Re-Appointed to Nuclear Review Board

Mechanical Engineering Professor Ali Mosleh has been reappointed to the U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board (NWTRB) for a second 4-year term by U.S. President George W. Bush, according to the White House.

Mosleh is the director of the Clark School's Center for Risk and Reliability. His research specialties include risk and safety assessment, reliability analysis and decision analysis.

The NWTRB is an independent federal agency established by the U.S. Congress in 1987 to provide oversight of the scientific and technical activities related to the packaging, transportation, and disposal of high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel in the United States.

The board consists of 11 members who are appointed by the president from a list of nominations submitted by the National Academy of Sciences. Board members serve four-year terms.

Appointed individuals must be eminent in a field of science or engineering, including environmental sciences and selected solely on the basis of established record of distinguished service.

The NWTRB ensures that the management and disposal of high-level waste and spent nuclear fuel have a sound scientific and technical basis.
