Zhao Zhang Wins 2011 UMD Distinguished Dissertation Award

Zhao Zhang

Zhao Zhang won the second annual University of Maryland Distinguished Dissertation Award in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Engineering. Zhang won one of four awards given for original dissertations defended in 2011 that make an unusually significant contribution to a particular field. His research focused on a new material, graphene, and how to control it using extrinsic regulation to create reliable electronics using this material. His dissertation also addresses innovative applications of graphene when fabricated into a carbon nanoscroll via scrolling of graphene on a substrate.

Zhang was encouraged by his advisor Teng Li to apply for the award. Li provided guidance and support throughout Zhang’s research. "From him, I have learnt not only research skills, but also a critical way of thinking and the professional attitude of working," Zhang said.

For more information about the Distinguished Dissertation Award and how to apply, contact Tita Chico (tchico@umd.edu) or Robyn Kotzker (rkotzker@umd.edu).
