Marcus Becomes First UMD Director of Faculty Leadership

Professor Steve Marcus, former director of the Clark School's Institute for Systems Research and a former chair of its Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is assuming a newly defined part-time position as the University of Maryland’s first director of faculty leadership within the Office of Faculty Affairs.

The overall goal of the position is to work with other offices on campus to create a stronger sense of community and quality of life for faculty, a supportive environment in which everyone can excel. Marcus sees two major components to this goal: stronger and more effective faculty mentoring and leadership development and support for chairs and directors.

"I envision ongoing programs to support mentors, junior faculty, chairs and directors, as well as communities for mentors and junior faculty, and for chairs and directors across the campus," Marcus says.

Long-term, the position of director of faculty leadership may be filled on a rotating basis by members of the faculty, "so as to strengthen the partnership between this office and its constituencies,” said Juan Uriagereka, the University of Maryland’s associate provost for faculty affairs.
