County Engineers Association of Maryland Endows Four Scholarships

The County Engineers Association of Maryland (CEAM) has committed $200,000 to fund four scholarships for Clark School undergraduate civil and environmental engineering students.

CEAM's members represent those engineers responsible for the basic services of county governments across Maryland. The organization is an advocate for infrastructure needs within the state.

Two hundred members of CEAM, and Clark School officials and students, gathered at the organization's April 29 conference in Solomons Island, Md., to witness the execution of an agreement to endow four scholarships and permanently establish the Roger H. Willard Scholarships at the Clark School.

Dr. Kay Brubaker, Clark School professor of civil and environmental engineering, and a former recipient of CEAM's Roger H. Willard Scholarship, said the scholarships will enable students to focus on their studies, rather than having to hold down jobs to fund their educations.

Dr. Brubaker said she had to work part-time while in school until she received her scholarship. She reiterated the same points she made in a speech at a scholarship luncheon in 1989, when as a senior she received her award.

"These scholarships celebrate success, empower success and inspire success," she told the crowd.

The endowment income will support at least four scholarships annually of approximately $2,500 each under the new agreement. These scholarships honor past presidents of the CEAM organization, namely Roger H. Willard, George F. Neimeyer, John H. Marburger, and Wilson T. Ballard, Jr.

Civil engineering students interested in applying for the scholarships should fill out the Clark School's general application form. The scholarships will be awarded to qualified juniors or seniors on the basis of demonstrated good academic performance and financial need. Recipients must be residents of the state of Maryland for the last 5 years.
