Teng Li

Teng LiAssociate Professor Teng Li won the 2012 E. Robert Kent Outstanding Teaching Award for Junior Faculty.  The award has been given since 1986 to honor Clark School junior faculty members for excellence in teaching.

Li’s teaching philosophy – to help students “develop an inquisitive mind in seeking knowledge” - drives the way he approaches the undergraduate and graduate courses he teaches such as ENES220 Mechanics of Materials, ENME382 Engineering Materials and Manufacture, and ENME670 Continuum Mechanics.
Li has been honored not only for inspiring and motivating his students in the classroom, but also for developing educational and research collaborations through iMechanica.org, a blog he co-founded that has become the largest online community of mechanics in the world.

Peter Kofinas

Peter KofinasPeter Kofinas, professor in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering and associate dean for faculty affairs and graduate programs focuses on the synthesis, characterization and processing of novel polymer-based nanostructured systems that have a variety of uses across medicine, energy storage and microelectronics. Presently, he focuses on novel blood coagulation-inducing polymer hydrogels, sensors for the detection of chemical and biological threats, nanocomposites for flexible antennae and design of shape-conforming nanostructured polymeric battery energy storage systems.

After 15 years at the Clark School, Kofinas and his students have published 57 peer-reviewed publications, which have been cited 966 times, with a steep climb in citations over the past 5 years. He has filed nine patent applications, speaks extensively at other academic institutions and serves annually on review panels for several federal agencies.

Kofinas has earned more than $11 million in federal research grants. He is a CAREER Award winner and a two-time recipient of the UMD Outstanding Invention award. He is a Keystone Professor and received the Clark School’s Junior Faculty Outstanding Teaching Award in 1999.

Michael Zachariah

Michael ZachariahMichael Zachariah, professor of mechanical engineering and chemistry, pioneered the development of new characterization tools for studying nanoparticles and use of these tools to further our understanding of the properties of nanoparticles in these fields. A significant contribution of Zachariah’s was the development of a one-of-a-kind mass spectrometer to study ultra-fast condensed state reactions. His research group has been working on the development of ion-mobility methods for characterization of nanoparticles, with applications for nanomedicine, global climate changes and new materials for energy. He has also pursued making new nanoparticle-based materials for drug delivery and energetic materials applications. Finally, Zachariah is also noted for having a tremendous impact on his doctoral and post-doctoral students as their mentor. Zachariah received his B.S. in biochemistry, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering, from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Silvia Muro

Silvia MuroAssociate Professor Silvia Muro is the only molecular and cell biologist in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering. A main direction of her work is the application of targeted nanocarriers to provide more effective therapies for lysosomal storage diseases. She creates tools for enabling new discovery and therapy, including nanobiotechnological drug delivery systems, among others. Her efforts to understand diseases such as propionic academia, a life-threatening genetic disease among newborns, led to the world’s first genetic pre-natal diagnosis. The European and Spanish Societies for the Study of Inborn Errors of Metabolism has recognized Dr. Muro three times with awards. She was awarded an NIH RO1 grant on her first attempt. She has published more than 30 high quality manuscripts in top-tier journals and her students already have won several awards for their research, including best meeting presentations and the UMD Invention of the Year award.

Clark School faculty members present their research to external audiences around the world.  In those situations in which a brief introduction to the school would be useful, faculty members may draw from the following PowerPoint resources:

Clark School Overview: Leading Indicators

The standard set of Clark School introductory slides [ppt] is intended to provide an overview that faculty, students, alumni, and friends of the Clark School can use at conferences or other meetings to make others aware of the Clark School's key attributes and strengths. The slides are updated every six months in coordination with the school's Leading Indicators handout sheet and Significant Accomplishments e-newsletter. The presentation consists of 17 slides covering the Clark School campus, the school's advantageous location in the federal region, research, education, entrepreneurship and service. Faculty members may use the entire overview presentation or select individual slides as appropriate.
