Transfer Admission

Your student could be struggling with any manner of new experiences: assignments, coursework, study habits, a new living situation, etc. Below is a listing of just a FEW campus resources and more information about the manner in which those offices and services work with students. For more in depth concerns, we highly recommend the Office of Parent and Family Affairs and their website, which is incredibly informative.

Counseling Center

The University of Maryland Counseling Center provides comprehensive psychological and counseling services to meet the mental health and developmental needs of students and others in the campus community. To help foster academic, personal, and career development in students, a wide range of counseling, consultation, and educational services are offered. The service supports the academic goals of the University through consultation with faculty, staff and campus organizations.

Contact Information:

Things to know:

  1. In one calendar year, a student can receive up to 12 free sessions with the Counseling Center.
  2. Students who attend sessions with counselors or psychiatrists outside of the University of Maryland Counseling Center can still utilize the services offered by the Counseling Center, depending on the situation.

Disability Support Service

The mission of the Disability Support Service is to coordinate services that ensure individuals with disabilities equal access to University of Maryland College Park programs. Any questions, concerns or comments about accommodations for your students can be directed to this office.

Contact Information:

  • DSS Main Office:  (301) 314-7682,    Fax: (301) 405-0813
  • DSS Exam Office: (301) 314-7217,   Fax: (301) 314-9478

Things to know:

  1. Students attending Orientation who require extra exam time may notify DSS to take the math placement exam with the extended time needed while they are here for their session.
  2. Students who register with DSS typically have to renew their documentation yearly, if not more frequently.
  3. Students MUST disseminate documentation to their professors in order to have the option for accommodation.

Learning Assistance Service

The Learning Assistance Service is the academic support unit of the UMCP Counseling Center. The LAS exists to help students achieve their academic goals by providing a range of services. All LAS services are free to UMCP students. Students may meet individually with one of our counselors who will help the student explore your academic strengths and needs and help them develop a plan to meet their goals.

Contact Information:

Things to know:

  1. The LAS office offers both student workshops at various times during the semester that are one day only as well as a variety of 8-week long courses.
  2. The LAS office staff is incredibly helpful and willing to work with students to discover their best path to academic success.

Office of Student Conduct

One of the primary functions of the Office of Student Conduct is to resolve disciplinary complaints filed against students at the University of Maryland. The student disciplinary process is intended to maintain the behavioral standards set forth by the campus community, and to provide all students with a fair process for resolving such complaints.

Contact Information:

Things to know:

  1. Students who are charged with academic dishonesty have rights and should review the website above for more information.
  2. An example of a violation of the Student Code of Conduct that relates to academic advising is if a student is found cheating in a class, they can receive an ‘XF’ on their transcript that denotes Failure Due to Academic Dishonesty. Other repercussions can depend upon the students’ situation.

Re-Enrollment/Reinstatement

The Office of Admissions serves students who have had to leave the university and wish to apply to return. A student will apply for either re-enrollment or reinstatement. Re-enrollment is when the student left in good academic standing (with a 2.0 GPA or higher) and reinstatement generally is when the student left or was dismissed due to poor academic performance OR they withdrew from their first semester. Other reinstatement situations may arise and questions should be directed to either Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support or the Office of Re-Enrollment.

Contact Information:

Things to know:

  1. Engineering students who are applying for Reinstatement have to apply to a Faculty Review Board and then MUST meet with an advisor from Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support. Reinstatement to the university does not necessarily guarantee reinstatement to the Clark School of Engineering.
  2. A student may be required to complete various activities or provide information to the Clark School of Engineering to support their Reinstatement. Questions can be directed to Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support.

Student Financial Aid Office

The Financial Aid office functions to provide assistance to students as they apply for or maintain financial aid for their college career.

Contact Information:

  • Phone Numbers: Main Office (301) 314-9000
  • Hearing Impaired: (301) 314-7017  TTY
  • Fax: (301) 314-9587

Things to know:

  1. The Financial Aid website has information about the FAFSA deadline, a listing of the yearly Award Guide and suggestions for how to achieve awards
  2. Engineering students have other options for financial aid and can learn more by researching Engineering Scholarships.

SENIOR YEAR (Defined as 90 or more credits)

Senior year is a busy and exciting time for engineering students.  Your student will be completing final coursework (including any capstone courses for their major), applying for graduation, sprucing up their resume, and practicing their interview skills.  They will either be immersed in their job search or investigating graduate school options.  Students should be aware that there are many important deadlines they must meet during their senior year.  Any questions regarding deadlines for graduation should be directed to Undergraduate Advising & Academic Support.

ACADEMIC ADVISING
This section, for each standard academic year for a student, will include information relating to their academic achievement including resources, programs and systems with which they should become more familiar. Information about majors, grades and academic advisement is included.

POLICIES/PROCEDURES
Within the policies and procedures section is more information about requirements students must meet and procedures which will enhance their academic achievement.

REGISTRATION
Students in the Clark School of Engineering must meet with an academic advisor (either from UA&AS or their departmental advisor) before they may register for courses. This section includes information related to course registration including relevant policies and descriptions of blocks that could prevent your student’s ability to register.

STUDENT INVOLVEMENT
The Clark School of Engineering and the University of Maryland offer many, many opportunities for student to get involved with and in the campus community. Students can be involved with multiple types of groups at different times but do not have to become involved if they do not wish to be. We recommend that first-year students be careful with the amount of additional activities they take on as they learn more about being a college student. Other than that precaution, the options are limitless!
