Reminders when creating four-year degree plans

♦ Double check all pre/co-requisites and minimum grade requirements.

♦ Utilize the information provided on the degree planning tools site.

♦ Be sure to complete your GenEd/CORE requirements in a timely fashion. Consult your advisor if you need assistance.

All incoming freshmen must develop an academic plan (which maps out all courses needed to graduate within your intended major/degree).

This website includes sample plans format for easy revision and general instructions of how to create a personalized academic plan.

Directions for creating an Engineering Academic Plan

The goal of the Student Academic Plan Completion Policy is to promote undergraduate student progress toward a degree. Each student must create and consistently review a Four Year Plan for their major.

  1. Download the academic plan below for your intended major.
♦ This template serves as a guide for which semester to take a course. NOTE: In
some departments, not all courses are offered Fall AND Spring semester. Ask
your academic advisor for this information to make sure you are properly planning.
  2. We suggest you use an excel document or spreadsheet to create your specific academic plan.
  3. Indicate on your plan any AP, IB, transfer work, or approved substitutions that may have already fulfilled degree requirements. For example AP credit for MATH140.
  4. Label your first semester and the year; for example “Fall 2013".
♦  List the courses you are currently taking your first semester.
♦  List your future semesters, such as “Spring 2013”, “Summer 2013”, etc. and the
courses you plan to take in those semesters.
  5. Use the Schedule of Classes and Undergraduate Catalog to determine the pre/co-requisites for the courses you are required to take.
♦  Plan each semester based on successful completion of those pre/co-requisites courses.
  6. Review the benchmark requirements for your intended major on Degree Navigator or from the list of benchmarks on the Advising Website.
♦  Make sure you are taking the courses in each benchmark prior to or in the semester of the review so you remain
on track. A student who does not meet benchmark requirements may be told to change their major out of the
            Engineering School.
  7. Once completed, review your plan with your academic advisor.
♦  If changes occur, you are responsible for creating a new plan and reviewing it with your academic advisor.

Registration

I have a registration block on my record. Why?

All undergraduate students in Engineering will have a mandatory advising block placed on their registration every fall and spring. This is done to ensure that engineering students are making satisfactory progress towards their degree.

How do I remove a registration block so that I can register on my given date and time?

First, are you in a declared major? If so, then contact the department's main faculty advisor for advising. If you are undecided, see an advisor from the Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support office, 1131S GLMH.

If you are on academic probation due to poor academic performance and have a block, you must visit your departmental advisor to discuss courses for the upcoming semester and then visit the Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support office, 1131S GLMH to make sure that all necessary stamps are given.

Who do I see for advising?

  • Undecided students may come in to meet with an advisor in the Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support office.
  • Students in a declared major should meet with their departmental advisor.
  • Transfer students should be seeking the expertise from their department advisor.

Changing Majors

How do I change my major to engineering?

Current UM students seeking admission into the A. James Clark School of Engineering will need to submit an online application, but before submitting the application, please take a few minutes to review the LEP Application Instruction. These instructions will give students a better understanding of what the Admissions Office will be looking for when reviewing applications. Once the LEP Application-ENGR is submitted, the Undergraduate Admissions Office will review your record for the admission criteria.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will send you a confirmation notice indicating that they have received your application. A decision will be sent to your email account about two weeks after the application due date (5th business day of January and June) with instructions of your next step.

How do I change/declare my major within engineering?

Engineering students are encouraged to select their major or engineering specialization as soon as possible but must choose no later than the end of their third semester.

Engineering students can change their major within the School of Engineering by simply submitting an online Major Change form found on this website under Forms.

What happens when I am notified that I must change my major out of engineering?

Students asked to "Change Out" due to no academic progress will need to declare another major as soon as possible. If assistance is needed students should come in to speak with an advisor in the Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support Office, 1131S GLMH.

Mandatory Academic Advising

  • Advising is mandatory for all Engineering students each semester. If you are not sure whom to see for advising please see our FAQ.
  • Students are notified about registration appointments by email. Students may also check online at My UM or TESTUDO.
  • Registration appointments are based on total applicable credit limit. Students with the most credits register first.

Registration

Registration Process: Currently enrolled students are invited to early registration by appointment. Registration appointments for the fall semester begin in April, and appointments for the spring semester begin in late October. Registration can be processed on the MyUM website My UM, TESTUDO or in person.

Schedule Adjustment: The schedule adjustment period is the first 10 days of classes for the fall and spring semesters, the first 5 days of classes for Summer Sessions I and II, and the first 3 days of classes for Winter Term and 3-week accelerated summer courses. Courses may be added, when space is available, during the schedule adjustment period, and will appear on the student’s permanent record along with other courses previously listed. Courses dropped during this period will not appear on the student's permanent record.

Drop Period: The drop period will begin at the close of the schedule adjustment period and terminate at the end of the tenth week of classes for the fall and spring semesters, and at a comparable time for summer sessions and Winter Term. Consult the Registration Guide or Schedule of Classes for dates.

During this period a student may drop a maximum of four credits. Drops during this period will be on the student's permanent record with a ‘W’ and will count as an attempt in the course. W’s do not count in the computation of a student's cumulative grade point average.

Repeat Policy

  • Any course may be attempted twice.
  • Students may repeat up to 18 credit hours.
  • A “W” counts as an attempt.
  • Both attempts and grades earned will appear on transcript.
  • Both attempts are calculated into the cumulative GPA…
except for courses originally taken during the first 24 credits (or for transfer students, courses taken during the first semester as a UM student), in which case there is a grace period. If the course is repeated, only the higher grade will count in the UM GPA.

For more information, please visit:  Repeating Policy for Undergraduate Students

Expectation of Progress Toward a Degree

  • Full time students are expected to complete the Undergraduate programs at the University of Maryland in four years.  In order to graduate in four years, students must plan carefully in consultation with an academic advisor, declare a major early, and complete 30 credits each year, which is usually accomplished by completing a normal course load of 14-16 credits each semester and by completing general education and major requirements in a timely manner.
  • Students who change majors, declare a major late in the sophomore year, enroll in a limited number of select programs, or take advantage of certain special opportunities that enrich the undergraduate experience may require up to five years to complete a degree.  All students should develop and regularly review a multi-year course plan to complete their intended programs.  If a student has special circumstances that make it impossible to complete a normal course load, the student would meet with an advisor to discuss the circumstances, the student's plans for continued progress towards a degree, and the implications for full-time enrollment.

Top of Page

Satisfactory Academic Progress—Engineering Courses

  • Students must achieve a grade of C- or better in all technical courses (non-CORE)
  • Students must achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 and completion of all degree requirements to graduate
  • Students must complete a minimum of 120 credits minimum (124 credits minimum for Aerospace) to graduate
  • No more than ½ of UM degree credits can be from a 2-year college, and no more than 90 credits from a 4-year institution
  • All degree applicable courses must be regular grading method (A, B, C…)
  • Graduation will be denied if any Incompletes (I) or No Grades (NG) have not been resolved

45 Credit Benchmark Review

  • Directly admitted freshmen will be subject to an academic review at the end of the semester in which they attain 45 University of Maryland credits. In order to successfully complete the review, students must have an overall GPA of 2.0 and have completed the gateway requirements: ENES 100, MATH 141, PHYS 161, and CHEM 113 or CHEM 135 all with a grade of C- or better. Students would also need ENGL 101 and at least one Distributive Studies CORE course from the Humanities or Social Sciences.
  • Only one single repeat of any one of the courses listed above is allowed. A course in which a grade of "W" is earned is counted as an attempt.

Courses Taken at Other Institutions

Courses taken at another institution may not be credited toward a degree program without prior approval of the college from which the student expects to earn a degree.

In order for Clark School Students to enroll in a course at another institution, the following must occur:

  • be in good academic standing (i.e. cumulative GPA of 2.0)
  • meet all prerequisites for the requested course(s)
  • fill out a Permission To Enroll In Another Institution Form [pdf] and receive permission from the Undergraduate Advising & Academic Support Office (1131 Glenn Martin Hall) before enrolling in the course

In order to view transfer course equivalencies for UMCP courses, visit www.sis.umd.edu/TCC/.

Students will not be allowed dual enrollment their first semester. They must obtain a GPA first and upon approval may return to the community college without violating the 60 credit rule.
