Junior Year (Defined as 60-89 credits)

Junior year is a good time for students to start looking ahead to graduation.  Students can select a topic area of interest in which to take Technical Electives or gain research experience.  A student’s experience in these courses and/or research opportunities can then translate into a solid resume that highlights his/her technical skills.

At 90 credits, your student should go through the Senior Audit process with their academic advisor.  The Senior Audit process allows students to review what coursework they have completed toward their degree and what further coursework is required.

ACADEMIC ADVISING
This section, for each standard academic year for a student, will include information relating to their academic achievement including resources, programs and systems with which they should become more familiar. Information about majors, grades and academic advisement is included.

POLICIES/PROCEDURES
Within the policies and procedures section is more information about requirements students must meet and procedures which will enhance their academic achievement.

REGISTRATION
Students in the Clark School of Engineering must meet with an academic advisor (either from UA&AS or their departmental advisor) before they may register for courses. This section includes information related to course registration including relevant policies and descriptions of blocks that could prevent your student’s ability to register.

STUDENT INVOLVEMENT
The Clark School of Engineering and the University of Maryland offer many, many opportunities for student to get involved with and in the campus community. Students can be involved with multiple types of groups at different times but do not have to become involved if they do not wish to be. We recommend that first-year students be careful with the amount of additional activities they take on as they learn more about being a college student. Other than that precaution, the options are limitless!

Sophomore Year (Defined as 30-59 credits)

Your student should be feeling more at home at the university this year. They know more of the buildings, professors and culture of the community that they have joined. The sophomore year is typically when students will get involved in some of the numerous activities on campus because they better understand how to manage their time.

Sophomores will typically go through the 45 Credit Review benchmark in the first semester of this year.  At this time, many students will be working toward earning an internship for the coming summer terms. Students should visit the Coop and Career Services Office for tips and information about how to go about obtaining an internship.

FRESHMAN YEAR (Defined as 0-29 credits)

As you are aware, the freshman year for a college student is a time of transition. The transition involves adjusting and managing involvement in the multitude of events, groups, sports, and course related activities afforded to college students. These opportunities can be both overwhelming as well as distracting. Students are also experiencing new teaching styles, larger classes, and different degrees of course difficulty.

Mid Semester or Early Warning Grades are good indicators of your student's performance and are normally reported by professors the sixth week of class, typically early October for the Fall semester and early March for the Spring semester. October is also when your student will first experience midterm examinations.  Utilize this time to gauge where your student is on the grade scale in each class by asking specific questions about assignments and performance. Finals week and the preparation for it will be especially daunting for a new freshman; this occurs in the beginning of December for the Fall semester and in the beginning of May for the Spring semester.

ACADEMIC ADVISING
This section is organized by academic year and will include information relating to your student's academic achievement including: resources, programs, and systems with which they should become more familiar. Information about majors, grades and academic advising is included.

General Transfer Admission Questions

► What are the requirements to transfer to the Clark School of Engineering?
Engineering is a Limited Enrollment Program (LEP), click here for admission requirements. Select engineering as the program of choice at the bottom of the page.

What are the application deadlines for admission?

For External Transfers – please follow the deadlines found on the Undergraduate Admissions website.

For Internal Transfers (current UMCP students) – the LEP application is due by the 5th business day of the month as follows:
• Spring semester admission: January
• Summer semester admission: June

What is the difference between an external and an internal transfer?

External transfer students are those who come to the University of Maryland from another 2-year or 4-year institution and meet the gateway admission requirements for engineering. External transfer students need to apply for admission using the Transfer Admission Online Application.

Internal transfer students are current University of Maryland students who have met all of the admission requirements for engineering. Internal transfer students need to apply for admission using the Online LEP Application for Current Students.

Admission application forms can be downloaded from the Undergraduate Admissions website. Please pay attention to deadlines as they differ for external and internal processes.

How will I be notified if I am accepted into the School of Engineering?
The Undergraduate Admissions office will contact you by mail for external transfers and by email for internal transfers. The Clark School does not have information on applicants’ admission status. Please contact Undergraduate Admissions if you have questions about your status.

What happens if I am not directly admitted into Engineering?
If you are not directly admitted, you will be given your second major choice or placed in Letters & Sciences. Applicants do not have the ability to appeal the admissions decision. Students must complete one semester and then apply as an internal transfer. If a student is not admitted at this time, they can appeal the decision.

If admitted to Engineering, what courses do I take?
Once you are admitted, you will be required to attend either a transfer orientation (for external applicants) or complete a Virtual Change of Major Workshop, meet with your intended engineering major department, and with the Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support office advisor (for internal transfers). During the Virtual Change of Major Workshop, you will learn the specific Clark School policies and procedures, review your prior course work, and have the opportunity to meet with departmental and college advisors. With the help of the advisors, you will select courses and register for classes based on prior course work and the major you choose.

How long will it take to graduate after I transfer?
Your anticipated graduation date will depend on your major, your prior coursework, and your planning. Some majors do not offer all of their courses every semester, so you will need to plan very carefully. Work with your departmental advisor to develop a “4-year” plan to map out your coursework.

If I took Math 220 at the University of Maryland, do I have to retake Math 140?
Yes. Students must have MATH 140 to meet the graduation requirements for an Engineering degree. Engineering is a math and science based discipline. MATH220 does not cover all the required material that is needed for future math, science, and engineering courses within the engineering curriculum.

I am a current University of Maryland student not in engineering. Can I take any Engineering courses without being declared an Engineering major?
As a non-Engineering student, you must get permission to take any engineering course. Seats in ENES courses are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, depending on seat availability. Interested students should visit the ENES/Keystone.

Can I talk with an advisor/department prior to applying?
At the present time, prospective transfer students are not able to talk face to face with an advisor but they can email their questions to transfer_engr@umd.edu.

Is it a good idea to start working or continue working?
Engineering is an extremely demanding field of study. It requires many hours of study time and group work. As a transfer student, the rigors of the content may be overwhelming at first. It is advised that new engineering students do not work during their first semester in the program to make appropriate adjustments. Depending on your major, content may be more time consuming. The Clark School, however, understands that some students may need to work, for financial or other reasons, and we encourage you to speak with your advisor to make sure you take advantage of all of the resources available to you.

Transfer Credit Questions

How do I get my transcripts from other colleges and/or AP credits sent to the University of Maryland?
You must have official transcripts from all previous institutions sent to: University of Maryland, Office of Undergraduate Admissions, College Park, MD 20742-5235. Please contact your school’s Registration or Registrar’s Office to request official transcripts. For AP credits, you will need to contact the College Board.

How will my transfer credits be applied to my degree?
There is a difference between acceptable and applicable credits. Many of your transfer credits will be accepted by the University of Maryland, but engineering may only accept those applicable to your engineering degree. Therefore you may lose some credits when transferring to the Clark School.

What should I do if my credits don’t transfer as I think they should?
If you are accepted to engineering, you can talk with your advisors about the transfer credits in question. Be prepared to have a course syllabus and other supporting course work material to submit for evaluation. You can also review UMCP’s Transfer Credit Center website to see if the course has already been evaluated.

I am coming from a 2-year MD community college. What courses should I take that will transfer and get me prepared for the Engineering programs?
Check out ARTSYS - Recommended Transfer Programs
ARTSYS is a web-based search tool for students transferring from a MD 2-year institution to a MD 4-year institution. You can search Recommended Transfer Programs; select your current institution and the University of Maryland, College Park; type in engineering and you can see the courses from the sender and receiver institution.

Engineering Student's Services

What types of resources are available for transfer students?
Transfers students have access to all resources at the Clark School.

Are there scholarships available for engineering students?
Scholarships are available for engineering students. Please visit the Undergraduate Recruitment and Special Programs website for scholarship opportunities.

What should I do and where should I go if I am having trouble in some classes?
If you find you are struggling in any of your courses, please start by taking advantage of your professors’ office hours. If the office hours are in conflict with your schedule, ask your professor if you can set up an appointment. Check with the department to determine whether tutoring is available for that particular course. You can also download the Resources for Academic Success document from the Undergraduate Advising & Academic Support. Department student lounges (i.e. ASME, 1st floor Martin Hall) are also a good place to find peers studying and doing group work. You may find a fellow student who is willing to provide you with some assistance.

As a transfer student, are internships and co-ops available to me?
Yes, once you are in the Clark School of Engineering, you will have access to the Engineering Co-op & Career Services office. Check out their website and sign up for eLink. The Co-op & Career Services office offers workshops and seminars on resume writing, career fair preparation, job search strategies, and more.

How do I go about getting involved with my major or other student groups?

  • Visit the student societies page for links to all student societies.
  • Make sure to pay attention to the Engineering FYI emails.

There are also opportunities for involvement for women and minority students:

  • The Center for Minorities in Science & Engineering is a great resource for prospective and current students. The Center provides academic assistance as well as social networking.
  • The Women in Engineering (WIE) program is dedicated to the recruitment and retention of women engineering students at the pre-college, undergraduate, and graduate levels.

Thank you for your interest in the Clark School of Engineering. The following information will guide you through the on-line application process as an internal transfer student. An internal transfer student is defined as a current University of Maryland student whose major is not currently engineering.

What do I need to know BEFORE applying?

  • All gateway requirements must be met prior to the application DEADLINE*
  • All previous transcripts and AP/IB scores must be sent to the University of Maryland and posted to your student account

Completing the online application

To access the Internal Application to the A. James Clark School of Engineering go to LEP Online Application. Make sure to review your online application before submitting to ensure accuracy. You may only apply once.

  • For your records, print out a copy of the application.
  • Verify the application with the Digital Signature and Submit.
  • Upon submission you will receive a pop-up “admissions confirmation notification” verifying your application was submitted and received by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. You will not receive an email – this is a pop-up window.

*FOR FALL APPLICANTS ONLY: If you are planning on finishing a gateway requirement during Summer Session I – make sure you indicate that on the application. This is the only way the Office of Undergraduate Admissions knows to hold your application for review until the completion of Summer Session I courses. If you are taking a summer course elsewhere you need to submit the transcripts as soon as the grades are posted or you risk not being reviewed for the upcoming semester.

Deadline for Submission

5th business day of January for spring semester admission and June for fall semester admission

  • The 5th business day is not necessarily the 5th day of the month. You can submit your application early; however you will not receive an admission response until after the deadline, when the applications are processed.
  • The Office of Undergraduate Admissions does not hold any applications for the next semester. If you miss the deadline, you will need to resubmit for the next deadline.

FAQ

How will I be notified if I am accepted into the Clark School?
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will contact you via email. The Clark School does not have information on applicants’ admission status.

What happens if I am not directly admitted into Engineering?
If you are not directly admitted as an external applicant, you will either be given your second major choice or placed into Letters & Sciences. If you are an external applicant currently completing the admission requirements (gateway) but will have them completed by the time you start at UMCP, you can request the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to re-review your final transcript for engineering once your grades are in for the gateway requirements.

If the admission requirements are not complete prior to your starting at UMCP, external transfer students must complete at least one semester and then apply as an internal transfer applicant once all engineering admission requirements are satisfied. If you are not admitted as an internal transfer, you then have the opportunity to file an appeal.

If admitted to Engineering, what do I do next?
Once you are admitted, you are required to attend either a transfer orientation (for external applicants) or a Virtual Change of Major Workshop, meet with your intended engineering major department, and with the Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support office advisor (for internal transfers). During either session, you will learn the specific Clark School policies and procedures, review your prior course work, and have the opportunity to meet with advisors. With the help of advisors, you will select courses and register for classes based on prior course work and the major you choose.

How long will it take to graduate after I transfer?
Your anticipated graduation date will depend on your major, your prior coursework, and your planning. Some majors do not offer all of their courses every semester, so you will need to plan very carefully. Work with your departmental advisor to develop a graduation plan to map out your coursework.
